Coldplay: Paradise
Coldplay hits the repeat button on Top 40 formula on Mylo Xyloto’s second single
Once again, Coldplay marinates the best of their stadium rock into a big colossal Top 40 sing-a-long on the band’s second single from 2011’s highly-anticipated fall release, Mylo Xyloto. The results are good, if not orchestrally enlightening. The enchanting piano accolades from Chris Martin and the epic chorus overlayed with delicious strings and choir-like voices places Coldplay inches from Foriegner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is,” but with the occasional Kanye West trimmings. “Paradise” is still a smart way to seque from their previous single, “Every Tear Is A Waterfall,” knowing the song’s lyrics even highlight its predecessor: “Life goes on, it gets so heavy/The wheel breaks the butterfly/Every tear, a waterfall/In the night, the stormy night /She closed her eyes.” It might not give serious Coldplay fans the goosebumps they are still awaiting on (something like “A Message,” Violet Hill” or “Shiver”), but pop radio will definitely crown the alt-rock band with a gold medal.
